A Fine Mess

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Much of my fine art photography is driven right now by my interest in current events. However, as a photographer I enjoy looking for ways to deliberately move beyond “objective” reportage and adding my own interpretation of the depicted events.

In this series, my goal was to try to capture the feeling of the historic Obama inauguration itself as well as the fine mess facing the new president and his administration.

The images were created in two steps. Proprietary software was used to search the Internet for pictures representing the legacy of the Bush administration. Another program was then used to “stitch” the resulting images on the photos that I shot at the inauguration to create the resulting mosaics. No attempt was made to select the images returned by the Internet search, which yielded results from the tragic to the banal to the humorous.

The Internet search terms included the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, terrorism, torture, civil rights, global warming and the recession.

Each 20” x 30” mosaic is an archival digital print mounted on wood panel and finished with a poured resin.

A Fine Mess was on exhibit at Toronto’s Gallery 44 from June 5 to 18.
