What else?

Maui was bigger than I thought. Having said that, I managed to cover pretty much the entire island in a car that used recycled vegetable oil!

The highlights of my road trips included the drive to Hana. UpCountry, Haleakala and Kahakuloa.

When I was researching my trip, most tour guides and websites seem to recommend all the greatest hits, such as the Road to Hana, in between plenty of snorkeling and whale watching. Personally, the Road Halfway to Hana would have been enough! Ke’anae village at the midway point has a gorgeous peninsula where you can picnic, watch the waves and even meet some pig hunters. Maybe if I had stayed a night or two in Hana and tried the local hiking and beaches I’d have been swayed. There’s always next time.

The less touted drive that in my opinion surpasses the Road to Hana is Kahekili Highway to Kahakuloa village in West Maui. The scenery of these twisty roads, rolling pastures and rugged peaks were more spectacular and less frequented than those encountered on the way to Hana. Perhaps it’s because the road isn’t so much a highway as someone’s driveway. Either way, both Hana and Kahakuloa remain relatively isolated because of their remoteness.
